All Around
by Sam M. Phillips

Drive down road,
Hot car,
Plastic smell,
Waving cane,
Snake rears up on bitumen,
Proud,
Erect,
Small head follows me,
Long tongue flickers.

Enter house,
Door protests,
Dry wood in nostrils,
Kookaburra laughs,
Cacophony,
Stomach sighs,
Empty pit,
A need.

Sink full of dishes,
Pick up bowl,
Two dead spiders on backs,
One white,
One black,
Legs curled.

White spider levitates,
Up,
Out,
Down,
Don’t know how,
Only know,
Spider has spoken.

Cook onions,
Oil,
Hissing,
Pungent,
Burnt eyes scan bubbles,
Boiling potatoes,
Riot,
Heat on chest.

Eat,
Sub-due,
Relax,
Talk to the voices in my head,
Listen to their replies,
All around.
