Succession
by Sam M. Phillips
Time hides the crimes,
The bleeding heart lies,
The broken blood ties,
The tied down,
Mired down remonstration,
A frustration to all with eyes,
Truth flies away in a single day,
The price we pay as history holds sway,
The mystery told,
Pray for a second chance,
As lightning lance takes life,
An age of strife
Between man and wife,
So removed and relaxed,
Hidden away in the subconscious,
A pompous display of filial affection,
Cannot hide detection,
The deflection of loyalty rends a household,
All told a terrible disaster,
Comes after false laughter,
A slaughter and sly glance
Leaves nothing to chance,
A fancy fanfare follows,
Gallows gown discarded,
Distrust and disgrace
Put to bed,
Funeral procession led
By murderers and adulterers,
Flatterers and foolish firstborn
Who now adorn themselves in royal raiment,
Attainment bought of ill deed,
Greed and gregarious grace,
Save face
And chase after the next one,
New sun rises
On wicked enterprises,
New king,
A base thing,
A kingdom won of death,
Now praised in the next breath.
