New Way
by Sam M. Phillips
Freed from self-inflicted prisons,
Sick of self-injected poisons,
Positions move to power,
Lower expectations and conquer,
Concur with an optimistic vision,
Collision of inner voices rises,
Reprises a role,
Where self-deceit offers nothing but defeat,
Complete overhaul needed,
New voices heeded,
Feeling conceited and mistreated,
Need to move on,
A new song to sing,
Will to wing myself out,
Shout a curse,
A new verse,
Nothing worse than recycling pain,
My brain is full of junk,
Defunct deficit,
A definite downsizing required,
I’m tired,
Mired in muggy hollow,
Follow it down
And then turn around,
And try to free myself again,
A strain against the cloying quagmire,
Destroying desire,
I will myself with internal fire,
Blazing flame burns the blame,
Attempts to tame a raging beast,
Or at least slow it,
Show it a better way,
So I may stay
Alive in my own skin,
A way to live and give myself a chance to be well,
A stance to stand against this internal hell.
