Slow Down
by Sam M. Phillips

Sit in harbour passing time,
Line of boats,
Notes of sea-birds,
Herds of masts,
Casts shadows across water,
Later I will move on,
But for now I wish to prolong
The enjoyment
Of this moment,
No detriment to anyone,
Lounging here in the sun,
I run pen across page,
Seek to cage this experience,
An experiment in projection,
Protection of my unique perspective,
Not a defective life
Because I seek to escape this strife,
The site of massacre,
Where the others procure their living,
Giving each other money,
Running to their grave
To save a buck,
Stuck in cycle of stress
Which I do my best to avoid,
It’s devoid of true wealth,
Which is made of mental health,
The self needs time
To unwind,
To find peace,
Cease to care,
I’m aware of their game,
Always the same,
It bores
With its laws,
The chores to occupy,
I’d rather look at the sky
And ask why
It has to be like this,
We could know such bliss,
Yet we miss so much,
Such a waste
To live in haste.
