Hunger
by Sam M. Phillips

Hollow stomach to starve,
Carve off a piece,
Ingest so pain will cease,
New lease of life,
Knife in hand,
Gland pumping hormone,
I can’t condone killing,
But at least I found him filling.

Grilling up steaks,
My heart breaks,
Takes a lot out of me,
Disagree with my choices,
Voices of the dead
Inhabit my head,
Perhaps I read their entrails incorrectly,
Ineptly believe I was right
To take a bite
Of human flesh.

Thresh about on floor,
The dead seek to settle the score,
Take everything ethereal,
Leave the material,
Surreal sensation as my soul is devoured,
My thoughts scoured,
My life soured,
Overpowered I cannot defend,
I believe my life will end,
But it does not,
I’m wrought hollow,
Endless cycle to follow.
