This Temporary Death
by Sam M. Phillips

Panic attack,
I lack the ability to get on track,
The agility to turn back,
The odds stack against me,
The powers reprimand me,
They fail to hand me
The sustenance I need,
The chance to succeed,
So I continue to bleed.

The deed already done,
My song already sung,
Can’t put my foot onto the first rung
Of the ladder of achievement,
Struck low by bereavement,
This dent in my head
Stops me from earning my bread.

Discerning dead ends,
But not trouble around bends,
These trends constructed by others,
Mental pillow smothers,
The covers come off
And the people scoff
At my illness,
Unable to feel my distress,
They dress it down as fake,
As I struggle to take a breath
And push through this temporary death.
