A Safe Place
by Sam M. Phillips

Worked up,
About to erupt,
If I can’t find an abrupt cessation
To this situation,
I’m going to scream.

Scheming mind seeks escape plan,
Leaning on any means I can
To calm down enough to exist,
Can’t persist with the way I was heading,
Bad outcome I’m dreading.

Dredging up old memories,
Stories I tell myself where I’ve been wronged,
Pronged stick pokes,
Provokes a rage response,
I pounce,
Tie myself to my chair.

I want to be unaware,
I don’t care
For the world out there,
I need it to shrink
Or else I sink into depression.

Session of writing
And I improve,
Ideas lighting
A way to soothe.

Groove of beat,
Tap my feet,
Complete another poem,
A safe place for my thoughts to roam.
