Feud
by Sam M. Phillips

Salamander with fire belly,
Jelly ready to explode,
Goad beast to fire,
Aim its muzzle up higher,
Desire to kill the enemy,
Feuding with their family,
Calamity caused by disrespect,
Long ago,
Built brick by brick,
Ego walls,
Stalls peace talk,
Walk the walk of forebears,
Man stares down his killer,
Grave filler,
Thriller of hearts,
Body parts
Splatter
As men scatter,
Batter them to death,
Crush their breath
With battle beasts,
The victor feasts
On the flesh
Of the foe,
It’s all they know,
Cannot grow
Beyond tradition,
Superstition keeps them here,
Locked in fear
Of those different,
Over there.
