Lighting the Way
by Sam M. Phillips
New page already filling,
Grilling my mind to find
The things that bind
Me to this kind
Of expression,
Another session
Proves fruitful,
I’m dutiful,
Recording beautiful
Thoughts that I’ve caught,
That I’ve bought
With hard-won experience,
My reference
Is the life I live,
And the energy I give
The symbols that revolve
Around me as I solve
The problems that trouble me,
I try to see
What’s inside,
Nothing can hide
As I confide
All my secrets in rhyme,
Taking the time
To elucidate my crime,
I climb higher,
Stoke the fire
To provoke my desire,
Sire new ideas,
Watch where pen steers,
It clears me out,
I scream and shout,
Turnabout in trance,
Take my chance to learn
As my feelings burn,
Filling an urn
From which ash pours,
Cores corrupted,
Sore erupted,
I’m misled
But well-read,
Not dead yet,
So I bet
I can still succeed,
If I just continue to read
And write,
And ignite
My pen,
I’m sure then
Something will come of this,
Just need to make sure I don’t miss
A single beat,
That I complete
My writing,
And keep lighting
The way for myself and others.
