Ambition
by Sam M. Phillips

I know I should have stayed put,
My lungs are filled with black soot,
I look back over rocky ground,
Think of the treasures I’ve found
And all the blood I had to spill,
Somehow I still
Think it was all worth it,
But now I can’t sit
Still for two seconds,
The next thing beckons,
Everyone reckons
I burn too fast,
No one can last
In my bright light,
Although I might
Temporarily hold attention,
The goal is retention,
And my journey has broken me,
Insert a token to see
The whole reel,
The real deal,
Let me steal
You for a moment
If it’s not too much torment,
I’m hell bent
On success,
I expect nothing less,
I’m the best
And I will not rest
Until I arrive,
Let’s see if I’m able to survive.
