Demon Crazy
by Sam M. Phillips
I’m demon crazy,
A democracy of spirits
Sets my limits,
Lends me credits
To spend on merits,
Deposits the sand of time,
Posits to hand my crime
Over to some higher authority,
I’m a liar seeking indemnity,
But I have no immunity,
They do not pity
Me for my faults,
They plunder the vaults
Of my vital humanity
With little humility,
City of golden treasure
They raid at their leisure,
My sacred soul,
The makings of a money roll,
Toll they take
As they fake
A bright light halo,
Tucked tight to drag me below,
Follow the glow
Of hellfire,
Of desire,
Of ambition,
Of superstition,
I’m in no position
To negotiate,
Can’t alleviate
The pressure,
The demons reassure
Me with their promises,
Their irises close,
Rows of teeth
Are moving beneath,
Leaf out of my own book,
Look beyond,
I’m fond
Of the life I’m living,
I’m not giving
Up so easily.
