Cravings

by Sam M. Phillips

I am utterly obsessed,

This problem can’t be addressed

Because by its nature

I can never be sure

Any solution is final.

.

Arrival at compromise,

Try to memorise

This feeling of appeasement,

A settlement,

Focusing on distraction.

.

Every action

Designed to take me away,

I’ve assigned the hours of my day

To keeping the powers at bay.

.

Showers are a way

To keep calm,

A soothing balm

That cannot last.

.

Cast me out into the abyss,

No one would miss

Me there,

I do not care

What happens.

.

The weapons

Of torment we unleash,

Each moment a feast

For some spiritual being.

.

I’m seeing

Addiction as a problem of the soul,

A way to fill a hole

We all feel.

.

Believing reality is real,

We all kneel

Before an altar,

Falter under weight

Of some great

Insistent force.

.

Persistent course

Carves itself in brain,

We’re never the same

Once we cave in.

.

I’m saving

Myself one though at a time,

It’s the only way to climb

Up and out,

Turn life about,

Shout from mountain top,

When will these cravings stop?
