New Pace

by Sam M. Phillips

I’m tortured by this,

So don’t tell me you miss

The old me,

I know you see

That I’ve changed,

Become deranged,

But everything had to be rearranged

Or I would go mad,

I was so sad,

Numbing myself with the drug,

Acting like a slug.

.

I dug myself in deep

In order to keep

Myself working,

But I was hurting

And so I gave it up,

Sorry for the abrupt

Change of attitude,

I don’t try to be rude,

It’s just that you intrude

On my fragile mind,

I need to find

A safe space

To learn a new pace.

.

I burn all trace

Of that past life,

All that strife

I had to numb,

Become dumb

Just to cope,

Hiding away in dope,

How much rope

Did I need

To lead

Myself to the gallows?
