To Act Correctly
by Sam M. Phillips
I’m very interested
And intensely invested,
Sorely tested
By my conscience,
I demand to know the difference
Between wrong and right,
As if there might
Be some single answer,
But I swear
There is no thing
That is one dimensional,
We all bring
Our own referential
Frame to a cause,
I cannot pause
And change sides,
Nothing hides
A man’s strongest conviction,
Every situation
Places him here or there,
Even if he is unaware
Of his own motivation
There are volumes in his action,
Our only satisfaction
Is to act in our nature,
This is the only sure
Way to act correctly.

I’ve always thought ‘kindness’ the guide to what is right. And that’s because we are all taught different things throughout the world about behavior. I like this one, Sam.

Thanks.
I can agree that kindness is a good starting point for motivation and as a guide to see if what we do is ‘right’. But, on the other side of things, whatever we actually end up doing is ‘right’ as that is what happened. It’s obviously very grey.
And this poem is more about getting in line with our true selves and acting in our nature, and that having an inherent ‘rightness’ even if we are acting without traditional morals.
