Cannot

by Sam M. Phillips

I wish I could leave things alone,

I always feel like I need to atone

For some past sin,

I never seem to win

My way free

Of what’s bothering me,

Cannot see

A light at the end of the tunnel,

Force fed funnel

Of bile I swallow,

I feel hollow,

Cannot follow

The path set out for me,

I am a burning effigy

Of my past-self,

Unknowing and unthinking,

There is no linking

Of cause to effect,

This defect

Inside my heart is permanent,

My pain is infinite,

A detriment through sentiment,

Meant to be letting this go,

But I know

That I cannot.
