Defects and Triumphs
by Sam M. Phillips
If I’m supposed to be writing,
And must admonish myself for not doing so,
Why must poetry never count as worthy?
It is just as deserving
Of life and expression,
A representation
Of emotions in motion
Short stories can’t touch,
Novels certainly are a different breed,
If you can succeed
In one or other,
Why bother to destroy self-esteem?
Of course we dream
Of being able
To handle all things,
But no one brings
Every skill to the table,
Fable of false ideal
To steal your value,
The clue is action,
Gain satisfaction
From all movement,
It’s all an improvement
Of the world,
It’s all hurled
Into the pot,
All bubbles hot,
Nothing wasted,
Everything tasted,
Your expression yours
To do as you will,
We can only really kill
Some time,
So there’s no crime
In spending as you want,
You can’t
Go wrong
As long
As it reflects
Humanity’s defects
And triumphs.
