Safe Space
by Sam M. Phillips
I’m so lucky to have this room,
I think back to all the doom I’ve felt
At the hands I’ve been dealt
In the past,
But at last
I can feel at home,
Let my mind roam
And feel at peace,
Let worry cease,
Or at least
Not cloud me so much,
Which is such
A relief.
.
I have belief
In a bright future
When I feel secure,
I’m not driven by dire need,
Neither am I propelled by greed,
The only thing that allows me to succeed
Is to bleed
For my art in a safe space,
Somewhere I can trace
The delicate lines
Of the confines
Of the mind,
So I can find
Out who I really am.
.
I don’t need to slam
Against harsh realities,
Test myself against calamities,
I find all my faculties
Are alight in my imagination,
I can simulate any situation,
Stimulate a demonstration
Of any emotion,
I have a rare position,
And it must be protected,
Projected into written works
To discover what lurks
Inside of us all.
.
And so I crawl
Into my room,
And resume
My purpose in life
Away from the strife
Of the marketplace
And the rat race—
My room is my safe place.
