The Record Breaking Flood

by Sam M. Phillips

The mud of the flood

Waters stretches into the distance,

Dance of brown waves,

Nothing saves

The crops from destruction,

Nothing stops the action

Of wind and rain,

See the valley strain

To contain the deluge,

There is no refuge

Except high ground,

No roads to be found,

Sound of creeks overflowing,

The damage growing,

Everyone knowing

What’s to come,

And wishing the sun

Would break through the clouds,

And that the shrouds

Of ominous grey

Would just go away,

But they are here to stay,

Fear as trees sway,

The storm will play

With us like toys

As nature deploys

All its furious force,

Source of life and death,

The in and out breath

That gives and takes,

Makes life worth living

When it’s giving,

But there’s hell to pay

When it takes away.
