Get It Together
by Sam M. Phillips
I should be a writing
A fictional short story,
But even if I have the ability,
I lack the energy,
So I guess poetry
Will have to do instead—
.
I let my head
Drift in a steel grey sea
Of happiness and misery,
I seek out an image
In the drifting mirage
Before me—
.
Poetry, restore me!
Let me be the person
I’m so certain
I am capable of being,
I’m sure of seeing
A vision of truth—
.
Give me the proof
That this life is real,
How do I know what I feel
Is not an illusion?
I seek comfort in confusion,
There is no solace in security—
.
What is ahead of me?
There is no way of knowing,
My dreams are showing
One possible set of outcomes,
My heart beat drums
To contemplate the possibilities—
.
All of the cities
Built by man
Eventually can
Fade away,
So what can stay
Solid here?
.
No wonder we fear
The process of change
And what is strange,
No wonder we’re lost,
But this is the cost
Of a human life—
.
We wallow in strife,
A quagmire of hate,
But it’s never too late
To choose love,
As above,
So below—
.
We all should know
The universe is on our side,
We can try and hide
From this benevolent force,
But of course
It can shine through—
.
I’m tired too,
But we can all try,
Why deny
What is true in our hearts?
We can all play our parts
And grow stronger—
.
Together.
