Bruised Brain Used Again

by Sam M. Phillips

My mind moves so fast,

I cast my net,

And yet I wonder

Whether what I ponder

Is worth recording,

And will be called writing,

Or am I biting

My flesh to no avail?

.

I cannot fail,

I have a tale

To tell like any other,

I need to cover

My life in report,

Even if I distort

Through passion and prose.

.

I see the rows

Of the gravestones,

I know my bones

Will lie there too,

And so I have to do

Something while I’m here.

.

Although I don’t fear

Death or pain,

I want to breathe again

Through new lips,

My soul rips

Up off this page

And sets your mind in rage.

.

I cannot assuage

My hunger or anger,

I am no stranger

To dark desires,

I’ve lit fires

Beneath myself,

Destroyed my health

In agitation.

.

But this situation

Is fun for me,

I’m able to see

Its vast production,

Even if the action

Doesn’t bring satisfaction

To anyone but myself.

.

But I do want to help

Those who feel the same,

Life is a game,

So don’t be tame,

Go into the fray again,

And beat your brain black and blue,

Unless you’ve got

Something better to do.
