Direction and Doing
by Sam M. Phillips
I have to lie down now,
I don’t know how
I used to do so much,
I have such
A bad backache,
I need to take
A load off a while,
Rethink my lifestyle.
.
While I’m waiting,
Deliberating my choices,
Voices are telling
Me I’m failing,
Trailing far behind
That other kind
Of rare creature,
I do not feature
The same special abilities
Which they do,
My actions few
And frivolous,
I’m half delirious
As I stare,
Serious and unaware
Of any contradiction
Which my affliction
May rouse in you,
I push to continue,
There’s nothing else to do,
Few are this strong,
Can you hold on this long?
.
Wrong path to take,
I lie down
To rest my backache,
I am a clown,
Unable to take
The punishment I deserve,
Serve my time,
Done just fine,
Back in line,
Here we are,
Far from the front,
They are trying to shunt
Us to one side,
But I will not hide,
I confide in you
A desire to do great things,
Too bad my back brings
Me to the floor,
I did plan on doing more.
