Deep Sleep
by Sam M. Phillips
I wake up,
Chase the mist away
As I take up
The challenge of a new day,
We all play
Games within games,
Construct cages to dance in,
Give in to sin,
Live to grin,
Materiality,
Grip,
Elasticity,
Slip,
Superficiality,
Drip,
Modernity,
Rip
Me apart,
Start again,
Pain of birth,
Change is worth
At least this much,
Touch the stone,
Try to atone
For bedrock values,
If this continues,
Then we will exhaust all avenues,
Let’s look at the clues once more,
What are the raw facts?
What stacks up?
Cup half full,
I feel dull,
What do you seek?
I can barely speak,
I reach the peak
Of my performance
As if by chance,
Watch me dance,
Catch me in trance,
Lance in hand,
About to land
The blow,
We know
How low
We go
When we kill,
Fill our hearts
With darts of dharma,
I move beyond karma
And live pure,
Rama is a lure,
Drama no cure,
Are you so sure
You aren’t still asleep?
I can keep
Your body on ice,
Wouldn’t it be nice
To revive,
To survive
All this?
Would you miss
So much?
We’re such
Spoiled souls,
Our goals are there
If we become aware,
I don’t care
If you stare
At me like some rare
Animal in the zoo,
You haven’t a clue
What it is I do,
I move through
Five layers of reality,
Simultaneously,
Outrageously
Alive,
Survive,
Arrive
At the hole,
Sink the soul
Into a body,
Into a shoddy
Construct,
Contract
Signed,
Stars aligned,
Then you find
Yourself waking to a new day,
Trying to find a way
To make sense
Of all this dense
Information,
Stagnation,
Exhaustion,
Followed by a deep sleep
From which I never awaken.
