Subservience and Conscience

by Sam M. Phillips

I don’t care

For your stare,

You’re too aware,

Look over there,

I can’t rule you with fear,

You’re too near

To the source,

Of course

You don’t need me,

You feed free

From the fountain,

There is a mountain

For you to climb,

But you have time

All this slime

I spew

Is not for you,

It is for the few,

The naïve,

The ones who believe

I receive

The holy word,

It’s all absurd,

A power play,

I want to hold sway,

Everything you do

Must go through me,

It’s all I see,

All I think about,

Do not doubt

That I want control

Of your soul

Here and now,

But I don’t know how

To manipulate

One who can demonstrate

Actual independent will,

They have a hole

For me to fill,

My goal

Is to instil

In you subservience,

But you have a conscience,

And that makes all the difference.
