Cannot Pretend
by Sam M. Phillips
Down in the hole,
The depths of my soul
Are being plumbed,
I’m being dumbed
Down as I drown
In emotions,
Premonitions
Of a false event,
I’m being sent
Some strange message,
Read this passage
And tell me what it means,
It all seems
So real,
Can’t deal
With who I am
Or must become,
Echoes of a son
From another age,
I turn the page,
Remembering past lives,
Everyone strives
For understanding,
Life is handing
Me the keys,
I’m one who sees
The value in this pain,
Here we go again,
Justifying a broken brain
While the strain builds,
My family yields
Under the weight,
Too much to take,
I cannot make
It up to them,
But I can’t pretend
To be anyone else.
